My Favorite Movies of the Decade

Over the years, I've been inconsistent with end of the year lists or "top 10" lists. However, it's the end of a decade and I'd feel like the kid that wasn't invited to a classmate's birthday party if I didn't contribute something to mark the passing of, not only the year, but also the decade. I won't say these are the "best" movies of the decade, but they were my favorite movies, and here's my criteria:

  • I automatically included any movie that I rated a "10" on IMDb.

  • In lieu of "10s," which became increasingly rare post-2011, I included many "9s."

  • In lieu of "9s," especially at the end of the decade, I included some "8s."

  • If there were close calls, I asked, "Which movie would I prefer to watch again… right now?"

Statistics

The number of movies I watch each year has fallen drastically since 2015. This could be because I don't always see movies during the years they were actually released. I'm curious, though, if fewer movies are being made.

Of the movies I've seen, my average rating has gone up slightly. (Notice the range is not wide; the difference is only .61.) However, this could also mean that I'm liking more the fewer movies I'm seeing.

I'm also rating a higher percentage of movies as 8s, 9s or 10s as the decade progresses. Again, this could mean I'm liking more the fewer movies I'm seeing. This is quite an increase from 24.4% in 2013 to 45.3% in 2019.

Now the hard part, ranking these for the decade… as of right now, when my preference can change depending on the day and the weather…

There you have it! Let me know what you think about my choices; remember, they're "favorite" movies, not "best" movies (although I could make an argument that some are both.) There were many, many runners-up; I'm no mathematician, but I think Top 10 lists can have only 10 items on them.
